A Commercial Driver’s License, most commonly abbreviated as CDL is a driver’s license for a person who wants to drive truck or a bus. A CDL is an opportunity opener for a person aspiring to become a commercial vehicle driver

Types of CDL License

CDL License is classified into 3 types –

  • Class A – A vehicle with a GWR of much higher than 26,001 pounds
  • Class B – vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or a vehicle that will tow another vehicle no more than 10,000 pounds. Vehicles such as straight trucks, large buses, segmented buses, trucks belong to Class B This is a restricted license as you are not allowed to drive large tractors that tow 10,000 pounds or more.
  • Class C – vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not belong to Class A or Class B, but is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials

Department of Motor Vehicles

Each state has its own rules although there are Federal guidelines for the same and this is very well managed by every state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. The test is pretty strenuous as it includes written test and three part skill exams. So, it is very essential to get a proper education. At DMV they give a proper training in order to ensure whether you understand the necessary Federal procedures and provide instructions to suit your needs such as budget. The test process can be very much confusing as it involves different levels of training ranging from just reading manuals provided by DMV and practice tests to detailed schooling. Procedure to obtain Class B CDL License


One of the basic requirements for any CDL Class B License is that the candidate needs to be a minimum 21 years of age and be able to pass the eye exam. Besides this, he/she should posses a valid state License. Drivers who have moving violations are strictly prohibited from applying to this license. For Class B CDL license, you will have to pass the General Knowledge test, Basic skills test, Air-brakes test, Pre-trip inspection and any other applicable exams. Carry all the necessary paper work such as state issued ID, address, SSN, proof of Lawful presence in US, etc displayed in English. You may have to surrender the out of state license in some states.

1. Fees

There is a certain amount of fee one needs to fill out while applying for a learner’s permit, written exam and the skills test all inclusive when you are applying for a CDL Class B permit.

2. Study

You must have to study and learn the general knowledge questions to pass the state CDL Class B exams. As an option you can either choose Class B CDL course or a popular training school who can help you guide you throughout the course for clearing the exam with flying colors. DMV also provides CDL class B aspirants a list of practice questions and a CDL test samples in the manual in order to help you prepare for the exam. You may also obtain a CDL test book from book store or the library.

3. Submit CDL application

While you are submitting CDL application, you should have already signed up for the exam if you plan to give the exam on the same day. They will issue all the necessary test sheets which include multiple choice questions and true or false questions that relates to driving Class B vehicles. You must have scored at least 80 in order to pass the test. If you clear the test, then you will be sent to the next counter and will be issued a learner’s CDL for Class B Vehicles.

4. Practice driving using CDL Learners permit

You can hire an instructor or someone who has a license for CDL Class B type of vehicles to sit in the passenger seat while you are learning to drive the Class B type of vehicle.

5. Schedule appointment for driving skills test

You can either go personally to DMV and schedule a test. Now a days you can call them up or sign up online on the DMV website in order to schedule a date for your skills test.

6. Attend driving skills test

Besides this, you will also have to clear the Skills test or commonly called the road test, for CDL Class B type license. This is a hands on skill test involving a trip and inspection of the light duty truck, and hands on driving test where you would drive the light duty vehicle with the examiner. Once you clear the test as per their checklist, you will get your permanent license or endorsement. Clearing skills test will fetch you a temporary license slip which is valid for a month or so.

7. Receive your CDL

Your permanent CDL Class B license card will be sent to your home address you mentioned while signing up the form in or before a month’s time frame.

With all the stress and strain you are now ready to drive your light duty vehicle with your Class B CDL license.
