The modeling world is one of the most competitive areas in the fashion industry. It does not matter who you are; if you don’t have what it takes to be here you won’t last long. Such is the character of this world! But, that is the story of every other successful industry. You simply cannot carve a place here without standing out. So, if you wish to become a male model anywhere in the world, be mentally prepared for stiff competition.
Becoming a successful male model is as challenging as becoming successful in any vocation. Aside from being passionate and hardworking, there is so much you will have to do. From figuring out the tricks of the trade to embracing rejections and moving on, you have got a lot to deal with to make it big in the male modeling world. I have a few things to tell you that might be of some help to you but remember to explore and learn.
Here are 5 tips on how to become a successful male model.
- Be comfortable before the camera Confidence should ooze out of every inch of your skin. You step into a room and it should get filled with the air of prominence and vibe. Confidence, therefore, is indispensable to what you do. One area where your confidence is tested is in front of the camera. Many underestimate camera consciousness but it is actually a great deal. To ensure that your confidence is reflected in the picture you have to make cameras your companion. You shouldn’t shy away from camera angles (unless you have not consented at all), face them without reservation, and get rid of the stress. It wouldn’t come naturally at first; give it some time and you will get there.
- Nothing could be done without a portfolio Your portfolio is not a mere scrapbook with just your random pictures from different angles. There is more meaning to it. A good portfolio is crafted methodically and contains an array of shots such as full-body shots and headshots. You will have to invest generously in the portfolio and your expenses will include the cost of hiring a professional photographer, travel, and studio charges. Once you have your portfolio, it is time to send it over to different modeling agencies. Never forget: a portfolio is a model’s CV. Would you want to mess up now?
- Gain experience The beginnings are always tough. Yes, at the start of your career, you might end up signing up for low-key modeling sessions. However, it is advised that you consider all of these as stepping stones. Do not accept any kind of modeling gigs; however, those which are of reasonably good quality should do even if they pay low. As a beginner, you need professional experience, and you cannot have it just like that. Build up a strong background of professional experience by taking up as many engagements as you can.
- Networking is very, very important! No one can do without networking in the modeling world. Trust me, you need contacts so you will have to shed a lot of those inhibitions in case you have any. Attend social events such as parties and apply for professional development programs such as workshops and seminars. Do not forget to participate in modeling events, local or national. Throughout your engagement in these events, you will come across a lot of people who can be useful. One contact leads to another, and there is a domino effect. In time, you will become part of a gigantic web of contacts. Also, make sure you are visible on social media such as Instagram and LinkedIn. Follow or connect with fashion influencers, designers, brands, etc.
- Find an agency You can become a freelance model, but you will end up doing a lot of work on your own. Usually, models prefer to sign up with a modeling agency because it will then become the responsibility of the agency to take care of a lot of matters on your behalf such as finding gigs. That being said, agencies do keep with them a certain amount of your earnings, but a good agency would not rip you off. Many fraudulent modeling agencies run prostitution rackets so make sure you have done your research right before you sign up with any agency. Once you have found the right agency, you will get more exposure.
